2008 Senior Honors Banquet
hosted by the Coffey County Chamber of Commerce, Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall, Burlington, Kansas.
This annual event is hosted by the Coffey County Chamber of Commerce and honors the graduating seniors of Coffey County's high schools (Burlington, Lebo, Southern Coffey County, and Waverly) who have demonstrated sustained academic excellence (7 consecutive semesters of 3.0 or higher GPA).

The Coffey County community has continued to show support for this event and the graduating seniors who are honored each year by sponsoring students and their parents for the banquet. Other sponsors contribute to the success of the banquet through event sponsorships. The Chamber would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers, task force members, and members of the Chamber Board for their continued support of this event.

JERI POWERS
2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year

Jeri Powers has been a reading specialist in the De Soto, KS school district for 9 years and prior to that was a 3rd grade classroom teacher. Responsibilities in her current position entail teaching students whose reading development requires additional support, as well as providing professional development, literacy assessment organization and administration, and mentoring to teaching aides. During this time she has also written several grants to instigate and extend an early intervention reading program and provide additional instructional materials, along with initiating a word study program that is utilized across the district. Jeri graduated with an undergraduate degree in elementary education from Kansas University in 1983 and received a reading specialist certification from Emporia State and a master’s in teaching and leadership from KU in 2004. As the 2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year she is spending this semester traveling around the state of Kansas, speaking to college students, public school educators and administrators, and legislators regarding issues facing Kansas teachers.
