Hernandez Named to “60 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know”

Leonard Hernandez
CEO

A national healthcare publication once again named Coffey Health System Chief Executive Officer Leonard Hernandez to its list of “60 Rural Hospital

CEOs to Know.” Becker’s Hospital Review announced its annual list of innovative rural healthcare leaders on January 31. Hernandez and Dennis Shelby, CEO of Wilson Medical Center, are the only Kansas representatives on the list. Both were also included in the 2016 list.

“The 60 CEOs on this year’s list possess extensive experience in healthcare management, demonstrating their commitment to offering high-quality, accessible care to rural populations,” the announcement read. “Under the CEOs’ leadership, many of their institutions have earned recognition as top-performing rural hospitals in the nation…Becker’s Hospital Review analyzed compilations by ranking and award agencies, such as The Leapfrog Group’s listing of top rural hospitals and the National Rural Health Association’s list of top rural community hospitals. The editorial team also accepted nominations for the list. Individuals cannot pay for inclusion on the list.”

Since his arrival at CHS in September 2015, Hernandez led a sweeping financial overhaul resulting in a $2 million turnaround.

“Leonard has done a remarkable job in just sixteen months,” states Judy Reese, chair of the CHS Board of Trustees. “In addition to our $2 million turnaround, he is implementing broader initiatives that can bring even greater financial security in the years to come. This tremendous progress stems from Leonard’s leadership, knowledge, and passion for rural healthcare. He works extensively with the staff, board, county commission, and the community—and we all join together to celebrate this much-deserved national recognition.”

Hernandez shares this honor with his CHS colleagues.

“I am truly humbled and honored to be recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the 60 Rural CEOs to know for 2017,” Hernandez states. “Many things have to be in place for individuals to be included in lists like this one. I believe it takes a great staff, a great medical staff, a very committed board of directors, and very positive backing from the county commissioners to keep us all moving in a positive direction. It also takes community support and their continued utilization of our local services. I believe that Coffey Health System and Coffey County have all of those things in place. I appreciate the hard work our staff puts in every day! I share this recognition with each of them.”

The announcement includes a brief biography of each recipient. Of Hernandez, Becker’s writes “Mr. Hernandez became CEO of Coffey Health System, a 36-bed hospital with nine staff physicians and 13 outpatient specialty physicians, in September 2015. Mr. Hernandez concurrently serves as the vice chairman for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas board of directors. He has accrued more than 25 years of healthcare experience at hospitals across the state. Prior to Coffey, he held administrative positions at Morton County Health System in Elkhart, Wellington-based Sumner Regional Medical Center, Holton Community Hospital, Plainville Rural Hospital, and Wichita County Health Center.”
